| Quinn and his passenger, Matt Johnson of
Petersens "flying Bronco ad" fame, werein
the lead now and soon were climbing Cadillac Hill. The
rest of us ate lunch in Rubicon Springs. We were all
pretty beat. Lots of deep water and it was obviously
mosquito season so soon we all headed up Cadillac Hill.
We came across the Jeep that had rolled down the hill and
Roger and I tightened up our seat belts. Thunder was
pealing up ahead and we really wanted to get up before
the rain came. John blew a bead at this point and rolled
the flat tire up the hill to us so it could be aired up.
Roger and I talked to some Jeep guys heading down the
hill and they told us some conflicting stories about the
rolled Jeep while we waited for John to remount his
wheel. Cadillac Hill was where a few of us decided that a
return run in the opposite direction would not happen on
this trip. I was confident in Rogers driving but at
one point really thought we were going over for sure. A
jeeper was spotting Quinn in a place where the trail was
about as wide as a quad and pretty steep. There was a
tall rock on the left and a long drop-off on the right.
Im not sure if it was more terrifying for driver or
passenger as each truck leaned way over the edge and we
looked Certain Death in the face. We stopped for the
obligatory photo ops at the staging area on top of the
hill and let the adrenaline flush out of our systems. Glad to be on flat, level ground
again, we decided to make Day Four a day of relaxation in
Reno and scarfing on the buffet at the Silver Legacy. So,
after a quick stop for dinner in South Lake we headed
back to Placerville to get some sleep. In the morning Max
was positioning his van to hitch up his Bronco and drove
over Als well head! Oops! Luckily for us, Matt
Johnson, Bronco test pilot and emergency plumbing
engineer, was on hand to make repairs. And now Als
well head has a better flow-rate and lower coefficient of
drag or some-such technical mumbo-jumbo. When we finally
reached Reno, Roger managed to win $400. Not a bad end to
a great Rubicon Adventure
