The std automotive relays come in a couple varieties. Some have both a "Normally Open" (NO) terminal and a "Normally Closed" (NC) terminal.
With power to the relay's coil off, current will flow thru the NC, but not thru the NO. Turning on coil power reverses this, the NC doesn't flow current and the NO does.
For the switching to stay as it is with the relay energized after the relay is de-energized you need a "Latching Relay". I'm not aware of any std automotive relays with this function.

Hello all,
Not know the proper name for what I¢m looking for I¢ll try and explain it. I¢m looking for a relay that will cut the power to the load once power is put the coil. The load will need to remain off after the power is shut off to the coil. It could have a manual reset or require power from another source to reenergize the load. I¢m thinking I¢d like the manual reset better but either way would work. Anyone that knows anything about relays understand what I¢m looking for?
TIA,
Ken
