Joe, I agree with Lee on getting one that will cut more than 1/4". The same line of thought holds true for any equipment you buy. If it is at an idle through most of its life it will last a lot longer than if it is maxed out continuously. I bought a Hypertherm 1000 some years back. Will cut up to 1 1/4". I have used it on some 3/4", but most of the time it is used on 1/2" or less. Go for one that will cut at least 1/2-3/4" and you won't be sorry. Oh yeah, you will have friends come over and want to use it.

You will not get much for $600 in a plasma cutter. Save your money and buy
a larger 220V unit. My first one was a 110V Miller that would cut 1/4, but
it was maxed out at that. VERY messy cuts. By the time I cleaned up the
cuts it was faster to use a grinder on anything thicker than sheet metal. I
sold it and bought a bigger 220v unit and love it!! You want a sever
thickness of at least 1/2 inch to make clean 1/4 cuts. You will be around
$1200 up for a decent one that will clean cut 1/4". You can not buy one any
cheaper which will do much good on anything other than sheet metal.
