A congressman has no "rank" over me as he is nothing more than the elected talking head I and many others chose.Just look at their criminal records and you will understand.Military rank is different as thats what was enforced to us former Military members by the provisions we agreed to.I used to transport lots of "Cadets" around when they came to Ft Bragg but they had no rank over me as they werent officers yet but I let them play their games with the rest of them and enjoyed watching the uninformed.

I stand for the National Anthem out of respect for the Flag of my country and the song they sing but not for the singer.Remember Rosanne Barr's rendetion???

I love My country and would Die for it tomorrow if asked again but I do NOT trust our Elected officials any farther than I can throw them and dont trust anything out of their mouths.

I'll say it again: You respect the office/rank/position and the person holding the office or rank. The person of office/ rank or position will earn any loyalty or disloyalty they deserve, regardless and irrespective of your personal feelings for the person holding the office / rank or position.

If you are at a baseball game and Milli Vanilli or Michael Jackson is singing the National Anthem do you stand out of respect for the National Anthem or the person singing it?

The My-Lai reference was wholly in reply to your
salute-the-rank-not-the-man comment where you inferred that
office-holding somehow elevated the politician to the level of the
Constitution and provided him with the same level of loyalty. My-Lai
was used to show that an officer (or office holder as per the general
thrust of this discussion) only rates and receives the
loyalty/protection of the rank as long as they uphold their own sworn
responsibilities. The office itself provides no shield (actual or
implied) to the office holder that would allow them to be released from
    liability for violating their oath.
