Wow, you CA guys have it rough! Our Oregon DEQ stations also don't
provide any advice but I have never had them look at the timing... That
is amazing they failed you for being only two degrees off!!! You are
so close to passing I would think just a little more EGR would do it. I
wonder if you can get an old EGR valve from the wrecking yard and modify
it a little so that it will leak a little at idle?

Thanks for the advise Tony, However in Ca they have to check a bunch of
stuff including that the base timing is in the money. If the timing is
off at all you fail and are sent off to get it fixed. I don't understand
the thinking behind SMOG only test sites myself? but they aren't even
supposed to give you any information or help other than the test
results. A few years ago my 90 F150 failed only because the timing was
off about 2 deg. I had to take it home reset the timing and retest and
of course repay as well.

You, can cheat a little by retarding the timing a little and
manually opening the EGR valve. Both of these will reduce the NOX
levels. If you retard the timing too far the HC will go up however...
Do the timing first as it is super easy, 5 degrees will probably do
it...
