MessageThere's been a bad one going around lately that changes your background to a webpage with a red nuclear looking symbol that's been tough to fight because the programs are running when you try to get rid of them and they actively fight it. I found a good way to get rid of it.

Download Spybot, run it and download all the updates for it.
Hit Start -> Run and type MSCONFIG. Select Diagnostic Startup, hit OK and reboot.
Run Spybot and run a scan and fix the problems it finds.
Run MSConfig again and go back to Normal Startup and reboot.

A couple other tips. Google for a program call ATFCleaner. It will get rid of all your temp files where this stuff like to hide out. (and might clean your transmission)
You may also want to turn off your system restore, reboot, then turn it back on. This will clear out your system restore data. Sometimes they hide out there. Do this only if you are seriously infected because restoring to one of these save points may help sometimes.

  +1

Spybot Search and Destroy is a good product and free. Adaware is a good product too. Good luck and if you have questions let me know and I can help you out. Spyware is dangerous. Some spyware can gather info such as passwords to financial accounts and stuff like that. Be sure to keep a close eye on the computer you use to do you banking on. Run scans periodically, especially if you visit questionable sites. Kids sites often put spyware on computers so if your kids use the computer a lot, be sure to scan it often.

Here are some links to Spybot and Adaware.

Try spy bot first, it's free and takes care of a lot of stuff.

      Hello All,
I am not sure what happened but I am being tormented with a popup that tells me that I have a virus--then tells me to go to a particular website to by a spyware killer thing. From the cable company I downloaded McAfee but it doesn't do anything and the pop-up blocker isn't doing anything either. Really buying $30 worth of spyware isn't what I want to do unless I have to. Anyhelp would be great.

      Thanks,
      Matt
