[BFix] Electric Cars

I recently saw a demonstration of how a Toyota Prius can easily be modified
to become a plug-in hybrid by adding an additional battery pack. With this
mod the clamed rang on electric power is about 30 mi between charges with a
speed up to 52 mph. For a lot of city folks this could cover the bulk of their
daily driving. Additionally the car is still usable as it was originally d
esigned to as a gas hybrid for extended trips.
The cost of this add on mod is about $6K for lead acid bat’s with an
expected life of 2 years and around $11K for the Lithium Bats with a life of about
10 years. The people doing this are claming 100mpg using the car in both
modes. I certainly don’t have the money to go out and buy a Prius and do this,
but I think it would be cool.
Aside from the purely dollar per dollar argument for or against electric
vehicles, there are some altruistic views that should also be considered. If you
live in one of the smoggiest areas in the nation as I have for my entire
life the idea of lower emissions sounds encouraging, to say the least.
