Mike, the big advantage is that the tranny itself is much stronger 
without the lock-up shaft in there.  That feature is provided by a 
really small (like 3/4" diameter) where it extends and locks up.  It may 
be different on the 700R4, couldn't tell you.

As to why an AOD, why not?  Assuming I prefer to avoid giving any of my 
hard earned cash to AA, what O/D auto would you run?  I have a local 
builder who does great work and cuts me pretty awesome deals (the latest 
C-4 for the buggy was $400) and it still includes a 1 year guarantee.
