First off, you might be asking yourself, "what is a resto rod?". The term resto rod comes from the street rodding movment of the early 70's. It was a backlash from the wild creations of the 60's like the Barris Brother's cars or Big Daddy Roth. The basic concept is to create a modern version of the vehicle while preserving its original character. In execution, it means more specifically, to leave it very stock appearing on the outside while vastly upgrading the interior and drivetrain. My plan is to keep it uncut and unlifted and completely stock on the outside right down to the original hubcaps. But the drivetrain will be all late model stuff like a SEFI 5.0L/AOD combo from a Mustang or if I get really wild, a dual overhead cam 290 hp 4.9L Lincoln motor. I also want to upgrade the interior to make it quieter and more luxurious (won't be hard) and to have a nice stereo.
The project is still in its infancy so I'm still dreaming what the final result will look like. I'm even toying with the idea of converting it to 2wd. I'm also thinking about getting a complete donor vehicle and use virtually everything from it including the dash, 3rd brake like and such. Who knows where it will lead.
So far, I acquired a 1974 Bronco in the most unmodified virginesque state of any I have ever seen. It has had virtually zero upgrades over the years. We're talking original headliner, AM radio, 3 on the tree, jack (in the original bag) and so on. About the only upgrades it has gotten were a electric block heater (it's from Montana) and chrome valve covers. Since I bought it, I've just been trying to get all the little things working and doing some rust repair. Most recently, I replaced both of the front floor pans.
