The gun thread

Post by SHAWN » Wed Apr 10, 2019 6:48 pm

I know a few of you are gun guys. What are some of your newer toys? My newest is a Ruger Mini 14 in 300 blackout. Trying to decide on an optic for it. Primary Arms has a 1-6 that I am really interested in, anyone have any experience with their stuff?

Shawn.

My newest was this little .22 revolver that called to me on the way home from shooting last time.

Ya those heritage .22 revolvers are pretty cool... especially for the price.

I was curious if you were going to put on another one of those gatherings.

I need to either repair my shooting stand here or put one together out at the property near Browns.

whats a dualling tree?

I have a pretty light target rack but the entire stand area was hit by a tree and smashed. I need to rebuild it.

I haven't any new guns ...yet.
Looking at a Ruger .350 Legend. Looks great for hunting the blacktails around here. If it weren't that it's an odd cartridge, I would already have one.
It comes threaded for a suppressor and sub-sonic ammo is coming for it. I think it's sort of following the Blackout idea.
Good thing this car is rain proof!

I'm thinking of getting a Weatherby Fiberguard .308 rifle. Will be using it for hunting.

That would be a great rifle, not only a Weatherby but in .308. I think the 308 is the best all around caliber. I have had two 308s, a Savage 99 and a Ruger M77 International, loved them both... Lesson learned (also miss my Colt Combat Commander in .38 Super :( ), never sell a firearm :guns:

I am thinking of getting another bolt gun in the future... maybe 308 or 22-250, I don't know much about the 6.5 hype

Ya I regret selling the guns I sold. Most were of the Collector variety but wish I had em ALL back .
I always liked those savage 99s a friend had one in 300 savage . Seems we also shot one in a .25 caliber of some kind.
I also seem to remember Winchester having a little carbine in 308 - and i remember it kicked pretty friggin hard/fast - LOL . Light rifle. I've shot quite a few 308 rounds in a M14 - but they are anything but light. I like the 308 in short action rifles.
A couple days ago I saved $1200 -$1300 - didn't buy a Kimber " Hunter " and Leupold scope I've been thinking about for 10 years - LOL . One was in 7mm/08 the other was 6.5 Creedmore.
Brandon was looking for a hunting rifle so he bought a Ruger in 6.5 creedmore . It shoots fine and doesn't kick the crap out of ya. :D
Speaking of that -- Looking at rifles with him is a bad influence - LOL - I started looking for another ; don't need another one - but since when has that stopped us. Most of the " common " calibers work just fine on deer sized targets out to 200 yards or so and not much actual real world difference between em SO I was looking at 45.70s :) . I like the Marlin trapper but wanted a longer barrel . Their custom shop could do that I think but I didn't get a price on it.
Oh - I still have that 2-3# of Tannerite - in case that gives you any ideas - :)

Did you find anything Shawn? I’ve had the target model mini 14 since it came out like 20 years ago. The one with the laminated thumb hole stock and heavy barrel with “balancer”. Years ago I tried mounting a scope, but the signature abusive action is too violent to keep a scope honest. I might dig that thing out and try again.

Hey Crab. Yes, I did go with the Primary Arms 1-6 ACSS for the .30 caliber. It works great, I have not used it past 100 yards, so I really have not been able to verify the distance accuracy using the different hold points on the optic. And I was so busy dialing it in... i forgot to see if any of the subsonic holds were true.
I did a bit of trigger group polishing and installed an MCarbo spring... made a big difference.

All in all, I am happy so far!
