Manual Steering Box Question

Post by BAMonty » Mon Aug 12, 2002 6:28 am

My manual steering has about 3 inches play in it. I've had several people (to include the guy I bought the rig from) tell me to tighten the screw on top of the manual steering box. I've also been warned by a friend of the dangers of doing this and trashing the box. Has anyone tried tightening it this way? Did it trash the box or how did you do it and keep from breaking it? Thanks for the help.

the screw on the top of the box is to adjust the lash between the sector and pinion. If the lash is off then your steering will wander. The adjust should be slight thou. tighten it too much and you will put too much preload on the bushings/bearings.
Most of the manual boxes that I have dealt with wore out due to off-road abuse and big tires.
Unless your Bronco is a restoration, then I would switch to Power Steering.
